DECODE App puts people in control of their personal data, giving them the ability to decide what it is shared, how and with whom. From DECODE App, you can store your personal data and manage it in a safe way. The application is part of the technology developed in the DECODE project, based on a decentralised architecture for controlled and, if desired, anonymised data sharing, paving the way for the creation of a data commons.

DECODE (DEcentralised Citizen-Owned Data Ecosystems) is funded by the European Unions Horizon 2020 Programme, under grant agreement number 732546. The project exploring and piloting new technologies that give people more control over how they store, manage and use personal data generated online.

DECODE App can be tested in two pilots performed in Barcelona. The pilots will trial the technology and demonstrate the wider social value that comes with individuals being given control of their personal data the means to share it differently.

Barcelona pilots:

Digital Democracy and Data Commons (DDDC).
The pilot has opened a deliberative, participatory process on the politics and economics of data, and how to build a local data commons based on its results. You can keep up to date with the pilot and participate here: https://dddc.decodeproject.eu/
This pilot involves the Barcelona City Council and the city’s digital democracy software Decidim.org. The new DDDC platform integrates a DECODE module which allows e-petitions to be signed anonymously but in line with authentication requirements. This new e-petitions system offers to the participants greater control over their data, improve privacy via the DECODE App, allow data sharing and visualization through the BCNOW tool (http://bcnnow.decodeproject.eu/) and increase transparency and reliability via the DECODE distributed ledger.

Citizen Science Data Governance.
In this pilot residents will use environmental sensors which record factors such as noise levels and pollution. The sensors will be located inside their homes and in their neighbourhood. DECODE technology will enable them to share this encrypted data anonymously with their communities, on their own terms. The pilot tackles the technical challenges of collating and storing a stream of citizen-sensed data, while also enabling those citizens to control what information is shared with whom, and under which conditions.
